Project 3 (part A and B) – in support of your FINAL -

Generating 1 object out of many objects - Amalgamation Objects

Finished Metal/multimedia material casting

*DUE – 12/17/2018

Final -

For your final project which will be split up into two parts, you will juxtapose multiple shapes, objects, and/or materials to create a new automotive device.  You must join at least three objects into your single, final object.  The purpose of this object may be realistic or fantastic, however it should in some way link to your identity either as a person, or as a designer.  You must incorporate bronze as a significant element in your work, however, you may also in addition, use resin (epoxy or aqua resin), paper, soap, or any other material you can think of that can be formed using mold making techniques.

*Project 3, Part A focuses on making the molds and creating the initial wax castings that we’ll use for bronze casting

With each of your molds, you must incorporate the use of a “Mother Mold” around the silicone used to take the impression of your object.  Each mold must display a well thought out strategy formulated prior to making it that considers the object you’re making a mold of, the material you wish to cast within the mold, how many objects you will need to cast using this mold (edition #), along with ease of use.  Depending on how complex your objects are, you may need to make molds of them in multiple parts by either brushing up the rubber or by pouring a thick block around them.  If the material you’re casting is sturdy or fragile, you will want to adjust your strategy accordingly.

**Your molds must produce good castings, ie. They must produce bubble free castings that don’t have significant seam lines.  You must be able to use them more than once and they must be able to be intuitively used.  As well as functionally working, they must also look professional.

A professional looking mold is clean, well thought out, and easy to use.  They keys are intentional and appropriately sized based on the magnitude of the object you’re working with.  The pour spout is large enough to pour material into without spilling it.

·         ***TIP – A great way to make keys involves standardizing how you make them.  You can use the tip of a sharpie marker, wire loop tool, modified marble with a handle, the handle of one of your tools, or anything that resembles a semi-circle.

*Project 3, Part B, is a continuation of Part A.  You will refine the objects you’ve been working on and reach a professionally finished state.  This final object must use bronze or aluminum as the main component, however, you may also incorporate any other materials of your choice.  I suggest thinking about concrete, plastic, acrylic, steel, leather, fabric, etc.  Mold making must also be the main method of production behind each object you’re working with in contribution to your final, singular object.

You will be graded on:
